In the wake of Philippe Coutinho record breaking move to Barcelona in the January transfer window, we look at 7 players who have already played for Liverpool and the Catalans.
Coutinho is also the 33rd Brazilian player in Barça history and he is also the latest player to appear for both Liverpool and FC Barcelona.
Current Barça players Luis Suárez and Javier Mascherano made same moves — Mascherano in 2010 and Suárez in 2014.
The other five players have gone the other way, with some of them moving directly and some moving to other clubs first before joining Liverpool.
Here’s the list of the previous seven:
1. Mauricio Pellegrino
Currently manager of Southampton. The former Argentina international spent the 1998/1999 season on loan at Barcelona, moved to Valencia for six years before spending half a season at Anfield from January to May 2005.
2. Boudewijn Zenden
The Dutcman enjoyed three wonderful years at Barcelona making 64 appearance between 1998 and 2001.
He would then move to the Premier League with Chelsea then Middlesbrough on loan before joining Rafa Benitez at Anfield in 2005 where he spent two seasons.
3. Jari Olavi Litmanen
Regarded as one of the greatest number 10's ever, Litmanen could have achieved more if not for the injuries that plagued him.
He spent two years at Barcelona 1999-2001 after joining from Ajax but moved to Liverpool in 2001 where he failed to play regularly despite his impressive performances.
4. Pepe Reina
The current Napoli shot-stopper spent two years 2000 - 2002 as back up in Catalunya before joining Villareal who he left in 2005 to join Liverpool. He would leave in 2013 for Napoli where he is a club hero.
5. Luis Garcia
Like Reina, Luis Garcia is a youth team product of Barcelona's La Masia. He started out in Bacelona B played in 73 games between 1997 and 2002 and after a host of loan spells at different clubs in Spain, he returned to the club in 2003 spending one season.
He then moved to Liverpool and spending three season between 2004 and 2007 winning the Champions League in 2005.
6. Javier Mascherano
Moved from Liverpool to Barcelona in 2010 winning 17 trophies under a host of managers so far.
7. Luis Suarez
Before Coutinho, Suarez was the last player to move from Liverpool to Barca doing so in 2014 and becoming one of the world's best so far in his time at Catalunya.
