- PSG and Brazil attacker Neymar finishes third in the poll behind his former teammate
- Ronaldo has now matched Messi for the most Ballon d'Or awards with five titles
Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi has been named the second best footballer by France football behind Cristiano Ronaldo who won the 2017 Ballon d'Or award.
Ronaldo had earlier won the prestigious award to draw level with Messi on five titles which is the most of any player in history.
The trio of Messi, Ronaldo, Neymar were the top three footballers on a shortlist of 30 players.
Neymar, who left Messi and Barcelona in the summer for French giants PSG in a world record deal was named the third best player in the world.
Juventus legend Gianluigi Buffon was named the fourth best while Real Madrid midfielder Luca Modric was named fifth best ahead of teammate Sergio Ramos in sixth.
Messi has a 4 - 1 lead over Ronaldo in the race for the Ballon d'Or but Real Madrid's dominance in Europe where they have won three of the last four Champions League titles put the Portuguese level with his rival.
The Argentine has been in fine form this season, helping Barcelona to the top of the La Liga standings and qualification to the knockout stages of the Champions League.
