Champions League: Tottenham hold Real Madrid to draw

- Real Madrid and Spurs top group H after drawing match day 3 tie

- Raphael Varane scored an own goal in the 28th minute to put Spurs ahead

- Madrid equalized through Ronaldo's penalty after Modric was pulled down

- Dortmund held to draw away at APOEL in the other Group H clash

Cristiano Ronaldo once again came to the rescue for Real Madrid in the Champions League match day three clash against Tottenham Hotspur.

Spurs were the early aggressors and had ample opportunities to take the lead in the first ten minutes in the clash that eventually ended 1 - 1 at the Santiago Bernabeu.

As early as the third minute, Rafael Varane had to be sharp to block an effort from Fernando Llorente while a dangerous four minutes later also had to be dealt with by the Frenchman.

In the fifth minute Ronaldo hit the post with a header while Karim Benzema's rebound was put wide when it looked easier to score.

Ronaldo dragged a low shot wide in the 17th minute after a wonderful counter-attacking move by Los Blancos. Two minutes later, Kane forced Kaylor Navas into a smart save with a stinging header from a corner.

Mauricio Pochettino's side would take the lead in the 29th minute when Aurier's cross from the right was not well connected by Kane but bounced off Varane and past Navas to put the visitors 1-0 up.

The equalizer would come three minutes from the break when Cristiano Ronaldo converted a penalty after Serge Aurier was adjudged to have brought down former Spurs man Luca Modric.

In the second half, both teams had numerous opportunities to win the game. First Huge Lloris saved Karim Benzema's effort in the 55th minute after he was teed up by Casemiro.

Ten minutes later Lloris made two wonderful saves to deny Ronaldo. A first from a counter attacked was held while a second strike from the right was pushed out for a corner.

As the game wore on, Real Madrid became the better team but could not turn their possessions into goals.

In the other group H game, Dortmund were surprisingly held to a draw by APOEL. Sokratis Papastathopoulos cancelling out Mickael Pote's early effort.

Madrid remain top level with Spurs with seven point from three games and the same goal difference. Dortmund in third with just one point and APOEL in last place also with one point.
