Russia topple New Zealand in opening fixture of FIFA Confederations Cup

- Russia have made their intentions known at the start of the FIFA Confederations Cup

- The hosts defeated New Zealand 2-0 at the St. Petersburg stadium in the opening game of the competition

- Africa’s flag bearers Cameroon will begin their quest at the tournament against Chile on Sunday, June 18

An own goal by Michael Boxall and an easy tap-in by Fedor Smolov was all Russia needed to defeat Oceania side New Zealand in the opening fixture of the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup.

Host Russia were clearly the better side as they missed a handful of chances, but the three points was all that matters.

A lovely display by Erokhin and Poloz had set Glushakov through on goal, and the latter’s effort was turned in by Boxall to put the hosts ahead in the 31st minute..

Although New Zealand proved they could also be dangerous on a few occasions, Russia clearly dominated the game from start to finish.

Fyodor Smolov who was outstanding in the game got the second goal in the 69th minute. At the St. Petersburg stadium it ended; Russia 2-0 New Zealand. Portugal and Mexico are other teams in Group A and will face-off on Sunday, June 18.

Africa’s flag bearers Cameroon will begin their quest at the tournament when they face South American champion Chile at the Otkrytiye Arena in Moscow on June 18 as well.
