Former Chelsea goalkeeper John Phillip dies

Chelsea Football Club have announced the death of John Phillips, a former goalkeeper at the club, who passed away at the age of 65.

In a statement on the club’s website, the Blues sent condolences to family and friends of the former goalkeeper.

Phillips was one of the club’s goalkeepers for almost the entire 1970s and although for much of that time he was behind the great Peter Bonetti when it came to team selection, there was a period when he was the clear number one choice.

He was born in Shrewsbury on July 7, 1951, and joined Chelsea in August 1970 for £25,000.

He left Chelsea in 1980 made a total of 149 appearances for the Blues.

He also won 4 caps for the Wales national team.
