Lagos marathon: 1st Nigerian runner-up attacks government

The first Nigerian runner-up at the 2017 Lagos City Marathon Philibus Sharubutu has tasked the federal government with investing in Nigerian athletics and long distance runners.

Sharabutu was the first Nigerian at the 2017 edition but was beaten to first place by Ilya-Pam Mwanta.

Speaking to Naij.com just after crossing the finish line, Sharabutu told Naij.com Sports that the Nigerian government engages itself too much with football and ignores athletics.

The Nasarawa state indigene said he could have better some of the Kenyans but for ignorance on the path of the Federal Government.

"It is really painful seeing these Kenyans dominate because Nigerians can actually run faster than many of them," Sharubutu said.

"I know I could have done better but I have not be well prepared for the race. The government is focusing on football too much which should not be."

"As you can see there are many Nigerians who finished the race and with the right training sponsored by the government, they could do better."

He however said he was grateful for being able to participate in a competition last year in Paris but lamented such tournaments are not usually open to Nigerians.

"I am grateful that I was able to race in Paris last year but if we competed in more of such races, we could have been better and could have quickened our legs."

Recall that last year's winner Abraham Kiptum retained the title with a time of 2.16.19. Kenyan, Halima Hussein Kayo was the first woman finish the race.
