Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney says he would go into management once he retires from professional football.

The 31-year-old remains a key first-team player at Old Trafford despite some slightly patchy form over the last year or so, and scored his record breaking 250th goal for the Red Devils on Saturday.

The England captain also reveals that he is working on his coaching badges with a view into becoming a manager.

"I’ve publicly said before I’d like to go into management," he said.

"Obviously I’d have to complete my badges, which I’m doing at the minute.

"I feel it’d be a shame to have the knowledge I feel I have about football and walk away from it once I’ve finished playing."

Rooney has been playing at the top level since making his breakthrough for Everton at the age of just 16, and has won a host of major honours since his move to Old Trafford in 2004.
