Nigerian soldier wins international boxing championship in Lagos

Just as the Nigerian Army is celebrating its success against the Boko Haram terrorists at the Sambisa forest, one of its officers, Private Lawal Riliwan, has won the 2016 belt at an international boxing tournament held in Lagos.

The governor's belt is one of the oldest and most renowned boxing tournament in the country.

Riliwan, a private in the Nigerian Army won the international boxing championship in Lagos

Riliwan of Nigerian Army Sports Camp emerged overall champion at the just concluded 2016 edition of the Lagos state governor's international boxing tournament which took place today at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium, Lagos.

A statement by Brigadier General Sani Kukasheka Usman, the acting director of Army public relations, during the tournament, Private Lawal Riliwan defeated Dotse Dekpakou of the Republic of Togo to emerge the overall best boxer thus in the edition.

Private Riliwan had in October won the gold medal in the 60 kg weight category of the boxing event of the Nigerian Army Sports Festival 2016 in Abuja.

The statement said that already, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusufu Buratai, has personally and congratulated the soldier for winning the championship.

The event has been won by boxers such as Eddy Ndukwu, Obisia Nwakpa and Davidson Andeh among others.

The statement said Riliwan and his highly valued trophy would be formally presented to the Chief of Army Staff at the Army Headquarters in Abuja later.
