He had to be substituted late in the game and was replaced by Branislav Ivanovic.

The news comes as a setback for Chelsea as Hazard has been central to Chelsea's nine-match winning run which has taken them three points clear at the top.

They could move clear at the top with six points in tonight’s clash after second-placed Arsenal lost at Everton yesterday.

But as a precaution for the game, Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has decided to leave the Belgium international out of his squad for the midweek fixture.

This is because Chelsea will be playing five games in 22 days over the festive period.

Hazard has not travelled north, ensuring the Sunderland game will be the first he has missed all season for Chelsea.

It is not yet known if Hazard will be fit to face Crystal Palace on Saturday, December 17.
